Is a Franchise Right for Me

Is a Franchise Right for Me? The Ideal Mobile Pet Grooming Franchise Owner (and Who Isn’t)

Wondering if a pet grooming franchise is right for you? While franchising is an accessible path to business ownership for many, there are others who may not fit. Being clear-eyed about your goals, skills, and personal traits will help you determine the best choice.

Let’s take a closer look at the qualities an ideal pet grooming franchise owner has —and when you should consider other options.

Who Should Own a Pet Franchise?

Many people who’d like to own a pet franchise are unsure whether they can without prior experience in pet care. The answer to that question varies by franchisor. At Aussie Pet Mobile, we don’t require prior industry experience; in fact, most of our franchisees are new to the industry. While we love adding experienced groomers to our mobile pet grooming franchise family, our owners do not preform grooming services. Instead, as a franchise owner, you will hire experienced groomers, and we will provide them with access to the American Kennel Club’s, AKC S.A.F.E. certification program—at no charge—and sponsor one of your groomers to earn the AKC’s Professional Grooming Credential, to ensure you bring top-tier safety and grooming standards to every appointment.

Successful pet franchise owners come from all walks of life; that said, some backgrounds do have a natural advantage. Veterans are particularly good franchisees, as their military background and training gives them solid leadership skills and a keen ability to follow systems. You might also be a good fit for franchising if you’ve worked in:

  • Sales
  • Operations
  • Service
  • Large corporations

Of course, franchises [EP1] look for a number of other qualities, too. You’ll need to meet their financial requirements and your values should align with theirs. As you think about whether franchising is right for you, ask yourself the following questions.

1. Understand Your Why

Business ownership asks a lot of you. It’s important to be clear on why you’re doing this. If you aren’t passionate about your work or the reasons behind it, it will be harder to maintain your motivation through setbacks and challenges. One of the most common reasons to pursue franchising is improved work-life balance, but many are seeking financial independence, generational wealth, or the freedom of being their own boss. In pet franchising, a passion for pets and a desire to improve their lives is excellent motivation. Keeping your “why” top of mind will keep you moving forward.

2. Consider Your Strengths and Skills

A lot of whether franchising is right for you or not comes down to your personal traits. Franchise ownership requires you to keep a lot of balls in the air. To do that, you need flexibility, strong leadership skills, a calm demeanor — and you also need to be interested in the work of running a business. As a franchise owner, you’ll be overseeing staff, schedules, and customers all at once. Creating relationships, managing people, and keeping your team motivated are just as important as mastering the day-to-day operations.

3. Take a Close Look at Franchising

Franchising is different from starting an independent business in several key ways, but the main one is the business model. Being able to step into a turnkey model with proven processes is what makes franchising such a stable investment. Your franchisor provides you with the training, tools, and resources you need to succeed, no matter your level of experience. In exchange, you’ll commit to following their systems to the letter. While this can limit your ability to work creatively, most franchisees feel that the trade-off is well worth it.

When Franchising Isn’t the Right Fit

It’s entirely possible for someone to be a good business owner, but not a good franchise owner. In general, it might be best to look at other opportunities if any of the following apply to you.

  • You want to run the business your way. To receive the benefits of franchising, you have to give up some autonomy. If you have a specific idea of how you’d like to run your business, or if you want to have more flexibility to shift your products, services, or processes, it’s better to open an independent business.
  • You’re looking to get rich quickly. Although it’s true that franchising is a more stable investment, breaking even takes time. Patience, perseverance, and sticking to the business model will keep you on the path to success. If you’re seeking immediate gratification, franchising won’t provide it.
  • You aren’t willing to learn. Owning a franchise involves a lot of training: on the business model, processes and procedures, brand culture, sales processes, products or services, administration, and more. If you aren’t coachable, you likely would not do well in a franchise system.
  • You don’t love pets. No matter what industry you enter, it’s crucial that you’re passionate about the work. It’s especially important when you’re working with living things. Cats and dogs are beloved members of the family, and their parents are placing a great deal of trust in the businesses who care for them. If you don’t want to be a partner in the well-being of pets, it’s not the right business for you.
